Eibar, Spain, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – eighth Apr, 2022 ) :Belgian rider Remco Evenepoel grabbed the general lead on the Tour of the Basque Country on Friday after ending third within the fifth and penultimate stage behind Spanish winner Carlos Rodriguez.
Rodriguez, 21, made his break 14km from the road claiming his first skilled victory with a solo end on the ultimate climb, seven seconds away from Colombian Ineos teammate Daniel Felipe Martinez.
Evenepoel crossed in third an extra two seconds adrift after the 164km stage over rugged terrain from Zamudio to Mallabia which culminated in a slippery climb in moist circumstances.
Race favourites, together with Primoz Roglic of Slovenia, the defending champion, and French world champion Julian Alaphilippe, have been almost a minute and a half off the tempo.
“It happened as we had planned,” insisted Roglic, regardless of being left behind with a couple of different main riders on the final cross, the Alto de Karabieta, 16km from the end.
Quick-Step rider Evenepoel has a two-second benefit on Felipe Martinez heading into Saturday’s sixth stage finale which incorporates seven climbs over a 135.7km run between Eibar and Arrate.
